Anxiety is the body’s response to perceived threat or danger. During this reaction, certain hormones like adrenalin and cortisol are released, speeding the heart rate, slowing digestion, shunting blood flow to major muscle groups, and changing various other autonomic nervous functions, giving the body a burst of energy and strength. Originally named for its ability to enable us to physically fight or run away when faced with danger, it’s now activated in situations where neither response is appropriate, like in traffic or during a stressful day at work. When the perceived threat is gone, systems are designed to return to normal function via the relaxation response, but in our times of chronic stress, this often doesn’t happen enough, causing damage to the body and anxiety begins.

How can I get anxiety relief

PictureI find one way that is really helpful is to keep in mind the old saying “whatever you resist, will persist” I like to think of it as just allowing and surrendering to the thoughts. Seeing the thoughts for exactly what they are, just your mind presenting options to you. It’s not necessary to follow the thought and believe the thought. You can just notice it, observe it and then move on to another thought. But the most helpful thing of all that I have come across is truth cards.

So what are truth cards?
In essence they are like an emotional survival kit. They are small in size (credit card holder size) therefore you carry them around with you wherever you go. Truth cards are written statements that are created to help you on a daily basis to re-assure your mind. A practical, accessible item that can help instantly in the moment. Designed to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and replace these thoughts with helpful, truthful statements that are uplifting and supportive. They give you something constructive to hold on to when you’re going through a rough time, or help you focus your desires on what you want instead of what you don’t want.It is important to read your truth cards at least 3 x per day so that you can slowly retrain your mind to work for you not against you. Keeping them with you as much as possible is the idea of this pack, to make them constantly accessible. In essence your truth cards are acting as your rational mind, when yours may be temporarily inactive.

One of the other reasons they were developed was for those people who need assistance but due to low income cannot afford many of the treatment facilities
offered. The card packs are priced at $15.95 which is accessible for everyone. Whether your a student, a Mum, employed part time or unemployed, these cards are affordable and offer insight on each subject, leading to change in your behaviour and beliefs. They offer you effective coping strategies and new ways of thinking. Want to check them out visit  www.truthcards.co.nz

Things to remember
1. I attract what I fear.
2. What I pay attention to grows bigger.
3. What I observe with a calm mind dissolves away.
4. The racing of my heart is only adrenaline; it will pass the more I embrace it.

EFT Tapping Points

What is EFT?
EFT is a form of psychological acupressure that uses a gentle tapping technique instead of needles to stimulate traditional Chinese acupuncture points. The tapping on the designated points on the face and body is combined with verbalizing the identified problem followed by a general affirmation phrase. Combining these ingredients of the EFT technique balances the energy system and appears to relieve psychological stress and physical pain.  Restoring the balance of the energy system allows the body and mind to resume their natural healing abilities.  EFT is safe, easy to apply, and is non-invasive.

Designed by Gary Craig, a personal performance coach in California, EFT belongs to a new class of treatments referred to as Energy Psychology. EFT and are one of the most effective, efficient, gentle treatment techniques I have come across over the years I have been involved in the mental health profession. Scientists agree that the body is an “energy configuration” made up of positive and negative electrical charges in the form of atoms, the basic “building blocks of all matter.”  If we view the human body as an energy configuration rather than separate organs, parts and equations of chemicals, we will understand why and how EFT works.

The way I use EFT is very simple. I find the problem, check on a scale from 1-10 (10 being the worst) how I feel about the issue and take note of this number. Then I do a few tapping rounds on this issue. Once I feel like I have released the problem, I insert how I would rather feel instead. i.e when dealing with low self esteem, I do several rounds on the negative things my mind is saying and then I use the truth card anxiety pack to insert the helpful and more positive beliefs.  I read each card whilst tapping. Generally I do about 2-3 rounds of inserting the positive, then take a deep breath and check to see how I feel.

Personally, I have used EFT to help myself with self esteem issues, anxiety, pain relief, grief, forgiveness and letting go of anger.

How will I recognize anxiety?

As well as feeling apprehensive and worried (possibly without knowing why), you may experience some of the following physical symptoms:

Tense muscles

Trembling

Churning stomach

Nausea

Diarrhoea

Headache

Backache

Heart palpitations

Numbness or "pins and needles" in arms, hands or legs
Sweating/flushing

When is anxiety a problem?
We all become anxious from time to time. It becomes a problem when it interferes with life in the absence of real threat, or goes on too long after the danger has past.
